How Multimodality in Music Video Enhances the Meaning of Song Lyrics, the Conceptualization of Love Relationships, and the Construction of Female Ideology: A Case Study of Two Thai Music Videos — Son-Klin & Salak-Jit

Synopsis of this Study

Music videos increasingly become popular media for artists to boost sales and reputation. It contained some social issues and could influence people’s way of thinking and knowledge. This study aims to investigate the relationship between songs lyrics and music videos; Son-Klin by Palmy and Salak-Jit by Pop Pongkool and if the lyrics used to create the music video address any societal issues, using the discourse analysis framework by Fairclough (2001), Wodak (2001) as well as multimodal discourse analysis by Machin (2007), Kress & van Leeuwen (2001; 2006). It was found that besides the music videos that help to convey the meaning of the lyrics of the song, the MDA elements (e.g., lighting, color, facial expression, and symbols) can also enhance the meaning of the lyrics and the perception of love in both music videos as well and the music video contains some elements of the relationship issue. Moreover, the two selected music videos shared strong and independent female ideologies.
