Scene 12. While everyone was celebrating the New Year’s countdown, the man walked past behind her to go out of the party. She sited still with a sad face. Then the black screen with the sounds of the clock ticking appeared and it showed the date 1 January 2019 at the time 00.00.44 counting forward and the phrase “Happy New Year” appeared. Protagonist
The protagonist’s elements shown in this music video could be categorized into five elements which were inner expression, dressing, action, facial expression, and gesture.
The inner expression was the protagonist though along the music video. In scene 1, the phrase “It’s been a long time” (มันก็ผ่านมานานแล้ว) “I probably don't feel it anymore” (คงไม่รู้สึกแล้วมั้ง) represented her thought about the feeling about the man whom she met in the party. So, she thought that she did not sad and hurt about her past when encountering the man. In scene 4, the phrase “No hello. fine!” (ไม่ทักก็ไม่ต้องทัก) showed that she was not satisfied with the man that he did not greet her at first. Moreover, ironically that what she thought was that she did not care about this action, but she expected him to greet her at first. She was still hopeful but at the same time, she pretended to be strong. In scene 5, the phrase “Such a jerk” (นิสัย...) the use of slang words indicated the closeness that they had in the past. In scene 7, the text “….” represented her brain was blank and numb because her past cut her so hard and deep that she was unbearable. In scene 8, the phrase “enough” (พอ...) represented that she was enough for hiding her sadness and her feeling about the man. In scene 9, the phrase "stop being crazy…” (เลิกบ้าได้แล้ว...) represented her thought that she stopped herself from being weak. She almost flowed with her feeling of sadness. In scene 12, the phrase “Happy New Year” represented the words from the protagonist to the man. She could not make herself talk directly to the man. Moreover, she still had positive thoughts about the man.
In this music video, the protagonist was dressed in a V-neck brown top which showed the independent and confident characteristics that showed some parts of the body. Moreover, in scene 8, her long thick hair covered both sides of her face showing that she hid her sadness behind her long thick hair and that she was not ready to face her desire of meeting him again.
Her action in scene 2 was that she interacted with her friends but did not show her real interaction or intimacy with them, indicating that she did not enjoy the party’s atmosphere. In scene 5, she noticed the greeting from the man (touching her head), but she just noticed and ignored it. The reason that she did not turn directly and face him was that she has to pretend to be strong, but she was still in love with him. In scene 7, she walked out from the people at the party emphasizing the distance between her and the people at the party. Moreover, in scene 8, she was walking to the toilet which was a dark place alone representing the theme of strong. In scene 9, she tried to wear the ring which was the man’s gift indicating that she nearly let herself face her weak side only when she was alone. In scene 10, she refused to talk with the man showing the strong character of an idealized woman. She decided to walk away from the man representing that she could handle her feeling and her fear as she knew the truth that their relationship could never return.
Gestures also represent some significant meanings. In scene 2, she sat in a resting gesture, placing her left elbow on the table, and resting her cheek on her raised hand showing that she was a loner and not enjoying the party. This gesture continued to scene 3, in which the man was coming in behind her to the seat a few chairs away on her left side. This gesture acted as an invisible wall blocking her view from seeing the man.
Salak-Jit by Pop Pongkool
The Salak-Jit music video had 12 parts and the entire music video was 6:15 minutes long.
Scene 1. The music video began with a black screen and a notification on a cellphone that read “จริงๆแล้ววันนี้ก็น่าจะเป็นวันธรรมดาวันนึงแค่นั้นเอง" or " Today should be a normal day". The woman who was the protagonist woke up and picked up her phone in the dark and gloomy bedroom. Her phone screen read 4 August is her 12th Anniversary. It was raining outside. She got up and took a photo of her right hand with a butterfly placed on the window.
Scene 2. She was preparing to go somewhere outside by herself e.g., putting on make-up and cooking. Showing that the protagonist was alone and can take care of herself. The lyrics began and can be translated and interpreted the lyrics and the scenes told the background of the protagonist about the story of her relationship in the past. As the lyrics told, "Since that day, it's been a long time. It's been a long time since we parted ways". It told that they were broken up for a long time. Their relationship should completely end when they both meet someone new in their life as the lyrics say "Our story should have ended beautifully. When we meet good people". But the word "should have" was not mean that their relationship was completely ended, there was something hidden in their minds.
Scene 3. She picked up the flowers in the plant’s plot and put them into the broken vase. She examined and smelled the flowers and stand up and get outside. The lyrics can translate and interpret as there was something in her mind even if it was a long time as the lyrics “แต่แม้จะนาน ยังดูเหมือนมีบางอย่างที่ฝังในใจ” or “But even if it’s a long time. Seems like I still have something etched in my mind". As she picked and took care of the flowers in the plot, the broken vases represent the lyrics "The traces of the love you left behind. Never faded from my heart" or “ร่องรอยความรักที่เธอได้ทิ้งมันเอาไว้ ไม่เคยจางจากใจสักที”.
Scene 4. On the outside, she was holding hands with the man who was her new boyfriend and walking somewhere. They seem to be very happy from the smiling when talking to each other. Then she noticed the sign “Pieces of memories” and she invited the man to go with her. Inside the “Pieces of memories”, was the art exhibition that showed black and white pictures, and she seemed to notice something in the pictures shown in the exhibition. The lyrics can translate and interpret as "Getting hurt for her every time, every time, every time I still miss you. No matter how tight his embrace is, I still remember you" or “เจ็บแทนเขาทุกครั้ง ทุกครั้ง ทุกครั้ง ที่ยังคงคิดถึงเธอ” showed that the protagonist felt bad about her feeling of missing her ex-boyfriend when she has a new boyfriend. As shown in the scene where she was holding her hand with her new boyfriend, but she still thought of her ex-boyfriend.
Scene 5. She noticed a picture similar to the photo she took in the morning as in the first scene. So, she raised her right hand to compare it with the picture. In the picture, the butterfly was on someone’s right hand in the background of rain. She continued to examine more pictures near her with a confused face then, she found the woman in the picture looks similar to her. The lyrics can interpret as even though the protagonist started her new relationship, she still thought about her ex-boyfriend. As she went to the art exhibition with her new boyfriend, some of the pictures reminded her of her ex-boyfriend.
Scene 6. while she was examining the pictures in the art exhibition, she turned back and recognized the man who was in the navy shirt. He notices that she was looking at and he looked back. They both stared for a while each other with doubtful faces. “ใจเรานะใจ ใยจึงไม่เคยฟัง ใจเรานะใจ อย่าทำใครให้เจ็บช้ำ คนที่ควรจะลืมแต่ทำไมหัวใจยิ่งจำ กลับไปคิดถึงเธอซ้ำซ้ำ” or “Oh, my heart, it never listens. Oh, my heart, please don't hurt anyone. A person whom you should forget, but why does the heart remember it even more? Go back and think about you over and over again”, this lyrics part matched with the scene in which she accidentally saw the man (ex-boyfriend) the lyrics are mainly about she was knowing about herself about her feeling, but her heart did not do what she wanted. Her heart thought about/ yearned for him repeatedly.
Scene 7. she entered the room with a projector projecting a dark picture. It showed the picture of the broken flower vase which made her recall her past. In the past, they argued and fought. From their argument, they broke the vase. The lyrics can interpret as she sees the broken flower vase picture that is similar to the flower vase that was broken in her past (when they were arguing). This scene matched the lyrics part that "I understand that we have to break up", showing that she understood that there were some reasons that make them break up.
Scene 8. The camera focused on her face which revealed that she was sad. She saw the picture of the flowers’ plot which is similar to her flowers’ plot. The showing of her past that the woman and the man were both happy together and took a picture together with the flowers’ plot. Then a picture of the empty bed with a messy blanket. This showed that in the past they use to have a good time together. And the picture of the paint’s tools and the showing of their past that they used to have a good time together. The camera focused on her face again. She seemed to be mixed with the feeling of happiness and sadness. The lyrics can interpret as seeing the pictures of the things and places where they were together made her think about her past when she was in a relationship with the man. Matched with the lyrics “I secretly met with you some nights in my dream” or “ยังแอบนัดพบเจอกับเธอบางคืนในฝัน” indicating that she sometimes still thought about the man even though it passed for a long time, and she started a new relationship.
Scene 9. The scene jumped back to where they were staring at each other in the art exhibition. Her new boyfriend came and took her to another place. As same as her ex-boyfriend, the other girl came with him. They both walked past each other. While walking passing each other, her right hand and her ex-boyfriend’s right hand were touched.
Scene 10. While their hands were touched, it reminded them of a moment in the past that has come into their heads. The man gazed at the protagonist, and she looked away. The memories of his past with her came to his mind. The memories were in the warm tone color and more high key lighting which contrasted with the present time, cool tone color, and low-key lighting. Matched with the lyrics “I secretly met with you some nights in my dream” or “ยังแอบนัดพบเจอกับเธอบางคืนในฝัน” indicating that she sometimes still thought about the man even though it passed for a long time, and she started a new relationship.
Scene 11. The woman kept her hand away by holding onto her new boyfriend's arm which shows royalty. Then, she walked past the man. The ex-boyfriend and the protagonist face's look confused. The scene jumped back to the projector room, revealing that she was sweeping her tears while watching those pictures. The lyrics can translate and interpret as "Looking into his eyes, I still accidentally think that you're looking at me. I can hear your love song over and over again” or “สบตาเขาบางทียังเผลอคิดว่าเธอมองฉัน ได้ยินเสียงเพลงรักของเธอในใจซ้ำซ้ำ” this showed that even though the protagonist started her new relationship, she still thought about her ex-boyfriend. The "Knowing that we'll never meet" or “รู้ดีเราคงไม่มีวันพบเจอ” matched the scene in that she was holding her new boyfriend and walking pasted the man with a confused and sad face. This showing that she truly knew that they cannot be together again because of something in their life. The moment that she cried matches the lyrics "Secretly hide you in my heart" or “แอบเอาเธอนั้นฝังไว้ในใจ”, she secretly hid her feeling of sadness inside her and not letting anyone knew what she feels.
Scene 12. The scene jumped back to the projector room again, revealing that she was sweeping her tears while watching those pictures next to her new boyfriend on the right. At the end of the exhibition, the atmosphere was a brighter and warmer tone, her ex-boyfriend walked to the whiteboard which allowed people who visited this exhibition to write a message. He seemed to be confused while seeing something on the whiteboard. He turned his head to the right-hand side and found the woman. They both staring each other and smile. Then she left with her new boyfriend. He was looking back at the whiteboard and smiling at the message “happy 12th Anniversary”. He tried to touch it and then drew his hand back.
