Literature Review

This section presents the important literature related to this research. It is organized into two parts: the theoretical framework, and previous related studies.

Theoretical Frameworks

This study employed Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) in data analysis.

Inquiry Procedure

The study was conducted by applying multimodal discourse analysis. From two music videos, color and background, lighting, distance and element position, camera movement, and camera angle are the MDA elements that were used to investigate.

Step 1: Each scene in music videos was screen captured depending on the length and the parts of the lyrics. The Son-Klin music video has 12 scenes while Salak-Jit has 13 scenes.

Step 2: The scenes were exported into Excel to analyze the lyrics and multimodal elements.

Step 3: The lyrics of each music video were translated, described, and interpreted.

Step 4: The MDA elements shown in MVs were investigated which are color and background, lighting, distance, camera movement, and camera angle.

Step 5: Symbols of each music video were investigated and interpreted its meaning.

Step 6: Protagonists’ dressing, gestures, actions, facial expressions, and inner expressions were investigated and interpreted its meaning.

Step 7:  Elements of each music video were compared for similarity and contrast.
